Curriculum

PCN CDC utilizes Zoo Phonics and Handwriting without Tears in the Preschool Classrooms. As teachers plan weekly and daily activities they consider each child’s developmental level. The daily schedule in each classroom will include the following times of day, with variation depending on the developmental needs of the children.

Daily Schedule

Teachers plan activities for the day but can be changed when the group or weather indicates
that a change would be beneficial.

Check-In Time: No earlier than 6:00 am

Check-Out Time: No later than 6:00 pm

Children are provided with breakfast, lunch and two snacks throughout the day.

Schedules may vary per the specific needs of each age group daily.
Please refer to the posted daily schedule and lesson plan in your child’s classroom for specifics about the day.
Children may be combined in classrooms during the early morning or late afternoon hours if needed to accommodate staff to child ration standards from the State of Michigan Department of Human Services.

 

Schedule Details

Arrival – Please take time to talk to your child’s teacher and help their child settle into the classroom. Staff want to know how your child is feeling and how his/her morning has been. Letting your child know when you are leaving and creating a “good-bye procedure” can help make this transition easier each morning.

Breakfast, Lunch, AM snack, and PM snack – Children and adults eat together at the tables in the gymnasium. Meal times provide time for the children to engage in conversations. Children are encouraged, but not required, to taste each of the foods that are served at meal times.

Toileting –The Infant and Toddler classroom have a diapering area and hand washing sink located in the classrooms. All other children are supervised when going to the bathroom. Group bathroom breaks happen many times throughout the day. Individual children are taken to the bathroom as needed. The bathrooms are in the Taggert’s Play Area Hallway.

Outdoor Play – Children are encouraged to dress themselves as much as possible. Teachers help with zippers, ties and boots and guide children in learning how to put these items on. Children spend time outdoors whenever the weather permits. Adults supervise the children during outdoor play.

Large Group – Children are engaged in the same activity at the same time.

Small Groups – Activities planned for small groups will allow for children to build on their own knowledge at their own skill level.

Choice Time –Children are able to choose to play by themselves or join a group of children. Children may freely move around the room and choice what they would like to do.

Rest – The children spend part of the early afternoon resting. Most children sleep during this time. Quiet music and darkened rooms contribute to a restful atmosphere. Per state licensing guidelines and American Academy of Pediatrics, children under 12 months of age are placed on their backs to sleep.

Departure – When picking up a child, parents are encouraged to allow a few minutes to touch base with the staff member.

The Infant and Toddler classrooms are designed to meet the individual needs of young children in the context of a developmental program.

In the Infant classroom, daily routines and schedules are based on the individual infant’s needs.
As an infant develops, the Teacher and Parents will work together towards a toddler schedule.
In the Toddler classrooms, there is a general daily routine to which most toddlers quickly adapt.
